Animal Farm Essay A quote by Aung San Suu Kyi reads  ¨it is not power that that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a long short story, published in 1917 it reflects the events leading up to the Russian revolution and the Stalin era. Characters are portrayed by animals that live on a farm . The character Napoleon in Animal Farm is a clever and sly animal who uses fear and greed to rule the animals around the farm. Leaders who do not care about the welfare of their citizens and rule with fear can ruin a society. Those type of leaders and person and the most harmful to a society. Another way Napoleon uses fear to gain the control over the animals at the farm is he threatens them with starvation. Both of these methods used by Napoleon were also used by Joseph Stalin to gain control over the masses. If society gives in to these methods then they are just giving more power and control to the higher power. Napoleon also threatens the animals with saying jones is going to come back and that is a reference back to when Stalin told his people that if they didn’t do what he wanted the old way of living was going to come back to them. With that much power and having all those people listen your commands can make you feel like you are unstoppable and greedy. One of the major themes in this novella would be greedy and selfiness which is show throughout the book many times. The only thing the pigs want is everything good that comes from the farm itself. The pigs and especially Napoleon benefit of the hard work and sacrifice from the other animals.  ¨Never mind the milk, comrades!† cried Napoleon. Racism in the United States is still very alive and well. Even after fifteen decades after abolishing slavery, the United States is still a slave to its racist past. In all honestly, the United States hasn’t come to terms with its ugly racial bigotry and injustices. For example, Donald Trump was elected the 45th president; his rise to ascendancy was driven by a campaign that not only lacked basic human decency, but was filled with xenophobia, Islamophobia and misogyny. My Thoughts About “Do You Speak American” Free Essays

After watching this video, I asked myself â€Å"Do I speak American? † Absolutely, the answer was no. In the past, I thought American English was only a language which pronounced â€Å"r† heavily. Surprisingly, according to the map of dialect, America can be divided by seven parts. Honestly, when I hear a conversation or a speech, I can hardly recognize the accents without special note, although sometimes I can recognize the obvious accents according to the meaning of the sentence. For example, most young California say [? ] to replace [? ], say â€Å"like† as â€Å"lake†. According to my personal experience, when I traveled to Miami, Florida, I heard that most people in there said â€Å"lift† as â€Å"left†. Moreover, Net English used among young people is another part of interest. For example, â€Å"das kool† equals â€Å"that is cool†, â€Å"lol† means â€Å"laugh out loud†, â€Å"How ya doin hun† is â€Å"how are you doing honey? †, â€Å"g2g† means â€Å"got to go†, etc. Maybe they think typing English in this way is more convenient and fashionable, however, I do not think so. Furthermore, experts recommend that TV series is a good way to recognize and learn dialects since the actors of a program are come from different regions. At last, teenagers prefer to use some new words of phrases to express an common meaning, such as â€Å"bling bling† refers to expensive jewelry. This is popular and sometimes I also use that to express myself. Actually, I am surprised about the dialects of American English in the following aspects. Firstly, in North America, people will laugh at lobsterman’s dialect and make fun with the way they speak. As far as I am concerned, we should respect different languages and cultures. Even though we cannot understand the way of communication, every dialect must has its own value to exist. Moreover, although people dislike some dialects, they can always imitate those dialects they hate. It is unbelievable. In addition, I watched these three DVDs without subtitle. So when I watched the CD2 which introduced the dialects in the mid-land, I found it was difficult for me to understand what people said. However, it is easier to understand what the north and west people said. I think it means that the people of mid-land and south have strong accents. Frankly, there are some points that I do not know before I watching this video. First of all, Philadelphia shakes the American speech more than any other city. Secondly, the Black and the White cannot communicate with each other by using English at the beginning. Thirdly, some people who come from the mid-land consider New Yorker speak bad English, since New Yorker say â€Å"water† as â€Å"[w? :d? ]†. To be honest, as for me, I like the dialect of New York. Fourthly, some pronounciation of dialect are totally different from the original pronounciation. For example, in Ohio and Michigan, â€Å"yins† means â€Å"you†, and in north, â€Å"ayuh† is equal to â€Å"yes†, etc. Finally, looking at magazines to find new words is a job, its purpose is to update the dictionary. To sum up, I don’t think I am speaking American even though I am in New York now. The dialects in United States are diverse. In my opinion, dialect is a component of cultural activities. And some dialects are related to history, some are related to the life style of different region. There are a variety of expressions for dialects. Those include the differences of pronounciation, the new words for common meaning, net English, etc. Most important, no matter what kind of language we say, we should respect all of them and admit the existence value of them. However, the task of maintaining balance in diversity and managing the diversity issues is also challenging. As stated above, PWC employs 223,000 people in total which come from different countries, following different cultures and belonging to different religions. Further, the firm also balances the gender so that a mix of male and female workers could be kept in the workforce. PWC provides auditing and consultancy services which require a mix of young dynamic and old experienced people (PWC, 2017). Therefore, the firm also maintains adequate balance between the ages of the people so that a proper mix of youth and the old aged experienced personnel could be kept in the workforce. The firm is endeavored to build workforce which provides consists of people differing from each other in some or other way. The firm believes that the new ideas generate faster when the team of personnel is diversified in terms of knowledge, experience, age, and gender (PWC, 2017). Further, the fact that firm operates in 157 countries signifies that there would be great deal of cultural, religious, and race diversity (PWC, 2017). The people in different countries follow different religions such as Hindu, Muslim, and Christian. Further, the people also come from different races, which indicate that the workforce of PWC is quite diversified. Maintaining this diversity and balancing it appropriately in the future years would be beneficial for the firm in creating value for the stakeholders (Byrd and Scott, 2014). The diversity brings in different perspectives, values, and beliefs which are necessary for the critical thinking and innovative ideas. Diversity Management Strategies The diversity management refers to the managerial process of achieving perfect coordination in the work performed by individuals deferring from each other based on different parameters such as age, gender, knowledge and experience (Paludi, 2012). The organizations are considering the diversity management as the priority issue in the present business scenario. This is because the retention of workforce for longer terms is becoming difficult in the present times and if the firms want to retain the quality employees for long term, the management of diversity becomes necessary. It is quite established fact that wider the diversity in the workforce more will be the issues for management to resolve (Paludi, 2012). The managers adopt different strategies and approaches to deal with the diversity issues. Firstly, the hiring process needs to be structured by framing hiring policy that provides for equal opportunity to all the people (Paludi, 2012). The diversity cultural should be inculcated at the very stage so that the mind-set of the people being hired is set in that direction very initially. Further, after framing the hiring policy with the clear focus on the diversity, the management should take steps to make it effective by educating the people within the organization. The employees should be trained in regard to benefits of diversity in the workforce and they should be encouraged to work together keeping the overall interest of the firm in mind. Apart from that the management should be strategic in giving recognitions and rewards to the employees. It should not give an impression of biasness (Paludi, 2012). The policies for incentives and employee welfare should be made with the fairness and the focus should be on the development of all disregarding the age, gender, race, and religion. Further, the management should strive to increase the interaction among the team members. There must be every effort to increase interaction among employees belonging to different race and religions (Diversityinc, 2017). One of the prominent reasons that the firm could create value over the years is the effective management of diversity in the workforce.
