Math

Tour/Hack/Math Yesterday (Tuesday) was a very eventful day. It began with me in lab building toys (for anybody who is unsure, this is a good way to start the day). After working for 3 hours I decided to study for my 18.03 test that I had today. I worked for a little bit but then got distracted because a prefrosh (Danny 12) is in town and I decided to go on a campus tour with him and Jordan 11. For many of you, a campus tour will be one of the first things you do at MIT. To be honest, I really enjoy them! I get weird looks from anybody who knows me, but whatever, its still a good time. I tried to be as tourist-y as possible and take a bunch of pictures of stuff. Unlike the typical tourist, however, I decided to take pictures OF the tour, not IN the tour. I present to you a glimpse into what the average MIT student sees on a daily basis. The tour has stopped in the student center. They are learning about the wonders of Dunkin Donuts and Subway. After leaving the student center they head towards the main part of campus, listening intently. At this point we get to Lobby 7, home of the big interior dome. Danny asks me Is this the spot you were complaining about? The spot where people take terrible pictures of the skylight? Yes, this is it, just watch, youll see it happen. Sure enough, the lady to my right took a picture, the lady behind her took one, and then another guy took a picture. I stepped out of the crowd and got my camera out in hopes of capturing and documenting this horrible sense of photographic taste. As I waited I saw, to my amazement, that Danny decided to take a picture of the skylight. But I warned you! Why would you do it anyway!? Anyway, the tour moved on, and eventually we were in Killian Court looking at the great dome. This is the part of the tour when the tour guide talks about hacks, which is convenient, because guess what was sitting right by the steps into Lobby 10. Whats that black dot off in the distance? Its a hack! On March 4th, 2008, Gary Gygax (the creator of Dungeons and Dragons) died. He was important to many of the students here and so to commemorate his passing a group of hackers created a huge D20 and displayed it in Killian Court. Rest in Peace Gary. So thats the tour and the hack, what about the math? Ive discovered an awesome way to study for math tests. Basically, find a board room with a wall-sized white board, grab some friends, and fill the entire white board with math. Write everything from the entire unit on the board. Solve the practice tests, do everything, and dont leave until you know math. At 8 pm Maddie 11, Megan 11, Danny 12, and I all met at the Media Lab and commandeered a board room. We then proceeded to just spew all math onto it. When we started we had absolutely no idea what we were doing. Seriously, I havent been to lecture in 3 weeks, Maddie missed the last several lectures, and Megan just writes stuff down and doesnt actually pay attention. Danny has taken DiffEQ before but hadnt covered some of the stuff we were doing, so we were essentially teaching ourselves math the day before the test. I hope you realize that its impossible to study without getting distracted. When youve got white board markers and no idea what youre doing, some interesting things get written on the board. At first they were fun drawings. YAY! About halfway through harmonic oscillators we realized that we had no idea what we were doing. Us: Megan, why did you write that on the board? Megan: It was in my notes. Us: But what does it mean!? Megan: I dont know! It was in my notes! Us: But, but, shoot. Conversations like this spawned the following distracted drawings: But whats Figure 1? Oh. That makes sense. As we continued grinding through math we got to something called the Exponential Response Formula. Our teacher took the liberty of abbreviating it. ERF? Did you know that to the rest of the free world, ERF DOES NOT stand for Exponential Response Formula. It stands for Error Function. In 3.091 it stands for Error Function, in Mathematica it stands for Error Function, it stands for Error Function EVERYWHERE but in 18.03. This brought about this drawing: Strike! Strike! Quick sidestep. We all had our computers with us so I decided to take pictures of them. Here are the 11s computers: Two Dells and a Mac. And heres Dannys computer: Thats right, he was showing off his new EeePC. Anyway, Ive just noticed that all of these pictures have been pretty zoomed in. Let me give you an taste of the bigger picture here. This is one panel of six. Thats a lot of math! We continued work, coming on 1 oclock in the morning, and now had little gems like this scattered across the board: Math. Math. lol. Cool beans! Gotta love real solutions! Then we got to the devils math. Thats right, math that is pure evil. It looks so innocent, right? The Exponential Shift Law The exponential shift law makes absolutely no sense. We stared at it for the longest time and still couldnt figure it out. Eventually we kinda figured it out, but realized that it was completely useless because it could be easily replaced by another method that we already knew. We expressed our displeasure. I woke up this morning at 8 for a 9 oclock class, meaning I got a grand old total of 5 hours of sleep. Add to that how hosed I am and a bunch of other stuff and you get a very unhappy/unhealthy/unfun Snively. Ask Danny, he knows. Anywho, thats all for now, its time for me to go start calling you guys at the telethon. 5 hours of phone calls, woo-hoo!

Microsoft violations. In October of this year, the government finally asked a judge to order Microsoft to stop requiring PC makers to include Internet Explorer when they install Windows 95 in their computers. Attorney General, Janet Reno, who referred to the company as a monopoly several times in her press conference, claimed that the company had violated the 1994 settlement, and that the Justice Department would seek a $1 million per day fine if they didnt stop the practice. She said, This administration has taken great efforts to spur technological innovation, promote competition and make sure that the consumers have the ability to choose among competing products. [This} action shows that we wont tolerate any coercion by dominant companies in any way that distorts competition. (Labaton 2) The governments petition seeks an order that would bar Microsoft from compelling PC manufacturers to accept their browser as a condition of receiving the OS, Windows 95. It also asks the court to order the company to notify Windows 95 users that they can use any compatible Internet Browser, as well as provide instructions on how to remove Internet Explorer from their computer. In response to the petition, Bill Gates, Microsofts chairman and chief executive, said that his company was not violating the antitrust agreement. He proclaimed his belief that his company had every right to improve and add to the basic features of the Windows OS. He went on to say that he hoped to further improve Windows by adding new capabilities, such as speech recognition and machine vision, to it. The Justice Department has several key issues that it has to deal with in its case against Microsoft. By deal with, I mean they have to get around Microsofts answers to their charges. First, the department is accusing the company of threatening computer makers who delete the Internet Explorer icon. The company answers this by claiming that computer manufacturers are free to ship any competitor product they wish, b ut they are not allowed to disable features of our products, (Just Dept v MS 2). Second, the government is contending that the terms of Microsofts non-disclosure agreements are an obstacle in the way of their attempts to gather evidence for their investigation. Microsoft says that their non-disclosure agreements are no different than those of most companies within the software industry, as well as outside it. Finally, there is the matter of the competitive browser possibly representing a threat to Microsofts key product, its operating system. Company officials claim that by not allowing them to include their browser with Windows, the government is preventing innovation. They say that the pace of the competition will quickly pummel a company that stops innovating, and that the consumers win because competition drives firms to deliver better products at lower prices. In essence, Microsoft is claiming that by not allowing them to include the browser, the government is stifling the comp etition that it is trying to protect. Orin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, held the first of what he claimed would be several hearings on the Microsoft antitrust petition in the first week of November. At this hearing, the Senator produced an exclusivity agreement between Microsoft and Earthlink Network, Inc. It called for Earthlink to offer only Microsofts Internet Explorer and prohibits them from implying that another browser is available. What you have set forth appears to be a classic example of an artificial entry barrier. It is not designed to enhance the product. Operational analysis: by collecting information on the current and future tasks to identify the KSAs required to perform effectively in different areas. Person analysis: the evaluation can be identical for the proactive and reactive, and the provided information must be applicable. The reactive TNA (leopard learning.com n.d : online) focuses on identifying the current problems in the job performance and determine if the training is needed. Example may include new technology, high staff turnover, high accident rate, increasing customer complaints, and poor management practices. In the reactive TNA, the organisation analysis, operational analysis, and person analysis are also conducted, however it only focuses on one particular department or the issue on a particular part of the job (Blanchard et al. 2010: para 16). Employers do not necessarily need well-trained employees. I know that may sound like heresy coming from someone employed in higher education, but what employers truly need is employees who perform well. Training is one way to attain desired performance, but its not the only way ( Stetar, 2005, online) The TNA can be conducted by the following steps (Flinders University, n.d.: online): Step 1: Analyse the job Before the TNA is conducted, it is important to understand the job by collecting the information which can be based on the job description. All these resources will provide information about the job responsibilities, knowledge and skill required to perform efficiently. Step 2: Identify the gap There are many methods which can be used to identify the gap. However, the managers have to choose which method will be used and how. Moreover, they need to ensure that the information is useful, correct and complete. Three main methods can be utilised by the managers in the organisation (Anthony et. lc 2002 p. 210-211); include: Observation: in this method, the managers will observe the employees performance to see if they are doing their jobs well. In order to ensure this method is productive, the check list should be used. Interviewing: by using this method, it allows the managers to meet their employees face to face, therefore they can have a chance to understand the companys situation as well as the employees themselves. Questionnaires: if this method is used, all possible tasks that are presently performed must be listed. The advantage of this method is that the managers can include everyone and does not need to travel or spend time with each of them. Each of the method has its usefulness; however the manager should never be dependent on one method. Therefore, they should be combined and use together. Step 3: Decide the training solutions Once the gap is identified, the training solutions should be undertaken to find the best way which can close the knowledge or skill gaps. The training can be done by using different options such as: On the job training, one on one training during the work time The managers or senior employees becoming a mentor to any employees Improve the skill and knowledge through college, university or technical school education Job rotation Complete online training The training can happen in a short term or long term course. However, the time and cost will always need to be considered. Step 4: Evaluating the result after training After training the result has to be checked to see if the gap has been closed and if it was accomplished by: Asking the staff member to perform on the task which they are trained on Looking at the product line to determine if there is still neglected skills or knowledge Conclusion and Recommendation In conclusion, the TNA is a process which can be used to identify the skills and knowledge gap in order to close it (Drummond 1991, p. 4). In addition, it can happen within a short term period or over a long term plan by using the proactive and reactive TNA on the level of organisation, operation and individual (Blanchard et al. 2010:para. 2). However, according to Bill Stetar (2005, para. 4), training is not always the only solution because the employers may need the employees who can perform competently. My goal is to become a hotel manager. Hotel managers (Baxter 2010, para 1) are people whom run the room rental businesses and manage staffs within the hotel. The duties can be varied depending on the size and type of the business. However, the following requirement is normally compulsory to be met. Haas School of Business Programs and Admissions

The Haas School of Business, also known as Haas or Berkeley Haas, is a University of California, Berkeley school. UC Berkeley is a public research university that was founded in 1868 in the state of California. Haas was founded just 30 years later, making it the second oldest business school in the United States. Haas School of Business has more than 40,000 alumni and is frequently ranked among the best schools in the nation. Degrees are offered at the undergraduate and graduate level. Nearly 60 percent of Haas students are enrolled in one of the three available MBA programs. Haas Undergraduate Programs Haas School of Business offers a Bachelor of Science in Business degree program. The programs curriculum consists of a 7-course breadth sequence, which requires students to take at least one class in each of the following categories: arts and literature, biological science, historical studies, international studies, philosophy and values, physical science, and social and behavioral sciences. Students are encouraged to spread these courses out over the four years that it takes to earn the degree. The Bachelor of Science in Business curriculum also includes core business courses in areas like business communication, accounting, finance, marketing, and organizational behavior. Students are also allowed to customize their education with business electives that focus on more nuanced topics like corporate finance, leadership, and brand management. Students who want a global view of business can participate in Haas study aboard or travel study programs. Getting In Haas Bachelor of Science in Business degree program is open to students enrolled in UC Berkeley as well as students who are transferring in from another undergraduate school. Admissions are very competitive, and there are prerequisites that must be met prior to applying. For example, applicants must complete a minimum of 60 semester or 90 quarter units as well as several prerequisite courses prior to submitting an application. Preference is given to applicants who are California residents. Applicants who are transferring from a California community college may also have an edge. To apply to a Haas School of Business program, you should have some work experience. Students in the Full-Time MBA and EWMBA program typically have at least two years of work experience, with most students having five years or more. Students in the EMBA program usually have ten years of work experience or more. A  GPA  of at least 3.0 is standard for applicants, though it is not a firm requirement. At  minimum, applicants should be able to demonstrate academic aptitude and have some quantitative proficiency to be considered for the program. Haas MBA Programs Haas School of Business has three MBA programs: Full-Time MBA Program: The full-time MBA program is for students who do not plan to work while they earn their degree. This program takes two years to complete and requires full-day class attendance Monday through Thursday.Evening and Weekend (EWMBA) Program: The EWMBA program is a part-time MBA program that allows students to continue working while they earn their degree. Students in this program can attend school two evenings during the week or all day on Saturday. Either way, the program takes 2.5 years to 3 years to complete.MBA for Executives (EMBA) Program: The EMBA program is a part-time program for students who are either executives or have a lot of work experience. This program, which takes about 19 months to complete, meets Thursday through Saturday every three weeks. All three MBA programs at Haas are campus-based programs that are taught by the same faculty and result in the same MBA degree. Students in every program complete core business courses related to accounting, finance, marketing management, leadership, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and other business topics. Haas also provides global experiences for students in every MBA program and encourages tailored education through evolving electives. Other Graduate Programs at Haas School of Business Haas School of Business offers a one-year Master of Financial Engineering program that is designed to prepare students for careers as financial engineers. To earn a degree from this full-time program, students must complete 30 units of coursework  in addition to a 10-12 week internship. Admissions for this program are very competitive; fewer than 70 students are admitted each year. Applicants who have a background in a quantitative field, such as finance, statistics, mathematics, or computer science; high scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test; and an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 have the best chance of acceptance. Haas also offers a PhD program that allows students to study one of six business areas: accounting, business and public policy, finance, marketing, management of organizations, and real estate. This program admits fewer than 20 students each year and usually requires four or five years of study to complete. Applicants do not need to come from a specific background or have a minimum GPA, but they should be able to demonstrate scholarly ability and have research interests and career goals that are aligned with the program.
